THW launches new website

The Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) plays a vital role in responding to accidents and disasters both in Germany and around the world. The website www.thw.de has recently been given a fresh new look and enhanced functionality. The new design is modern and uncluttered, characterised by a new visual concept. The project team at Materna successfully supported the relaunch from concept through to implementation and launch. A key technical change is the exclusive use of standard interfaces, which significantly reduces operational complexity.

Robert Koch Institute launches new portal for health reporting

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has launched its new health reporting website, www.gbe.rki.de. On this platform, the federal institute provides information on the health status of the population in Germany, with a focus on non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and mental health disorders. The key features include interactive graphical representations of key indicators and the automated, taxonomy-based structure of the modules. Based on the design draft, Materna developed the final design – taking UX and BITV into account – as well as the technical concept, and carried out the technical implementation of the website.

Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) launches new website

The new website of the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) is now live at www.bmftr.bund.de. The design of the new website stands out thanks to its clear structure, intuitive navigation and optimised user guidance. Thanks to the modern design and a well-thought-out content concept, visitors have quick access to information about the Ministry’s remit. The technical infrastructure has also been completely overhauled to ensure a stable and high-performance platform in the long term. Materna managed the project from the initial requirements analysis, through the functional and technical concept and the design, right through to implementation.

New intranet for ITZBund

ITZBund has launched its new intranet in collaboration with Materna. The aim was to create a platform that is functional, fosters a sense of community and makes work easier. The agile development process, based on Scrum, regularly incorporated feedback from staff. Furthermore, the site’s accessibility has been independently verified. Materna supported the project from conception through to implementation. Through design thinking and in-depth interviews, core values such as a sense of community, innovation and user-friendliness were identified. In addition to the technical implementation, Materna provided training for the editorial teams.

A new look for customs

The Customs Authority has launched its new website. The GSB-based site is modern, responsive and offers extensive search functions. Key innovations include the navigation and user interface concept, as well as a new website design. The modernised colour scheme and fresh design support intuitive user guidance by clearly highlighting user interface and navigation elements. Materna developed the new concepts, including the style guide, and implemented them based on GSB 7.5, including a technical update of all functions. We are delighted with the modern website of our long-standing client, the General Customs Directorate.

The support portal for refugees from Ukraine

On behalf of the Federal Government, Materna has technically revamped the Germany4Ukraine support portal. This central information platform for refugees from Ukraine is available in four languages and provides reliable information on topics such as arrival, residence and everyday life in Germany. Highlights include the G4U Guide – a section featuring frequently asked questions that can be navigated interactively, much like a chatbot – the interface for the electronic residence permit (eAT) with geo-blocking, and the native app, which is directly linked to the GSB. Thanks to the eAT interface, residence permits can be applied for directly as a digital administrative service.

Greater clarity and improved navigation for the websites of the BGR and its sub-brand, DERA

The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) and the German Mineral Resources Agency (DERA), which forms part of the BGR, have launched new websites. Materna was responsible for the design and technical implementation of the relaunch project. Among the key changes is a significantly clearer layout. Clearer structures with simplified navigation offer visitors improved functionality, providing better guidance and faster access to the updated content. This also applies to the responsive layout, which enables the websites to be used on mobile devices.

The GSB is the federal government’s central, standardised web platform. It combines security, accessibility, cost-effectiveness and centralised governance in a sustainable solution, enabling public authorities to operate their websites in a compliant and future-proof manner.

A change is advisable in the event of technological obsolescence, increasing security requirements, new design or UX standards, or when operation and maintenance become increasingly costly. A structured generational change safeguards investments and ensures future viability.

The GSB is based on a standardised platform architecture managed by the state. Public authorities retain control over content, data and governance, and reduce their reliance on proprietary individual solutions.
