Data as a strategic resource

Using data strategically – Holistic strategies for data-driven organisations

Data and Analytics

Data is now a key factor of production. Organisations across many sectors face the challenge of managing data in a structured way, sharing it securely and making it usable across organisational boundaries. Modern data strategies, federated data architectures and interoperable data spaces form the foundation for this. They enable data-driven decisions, new business models and sustainable digital transformation. Materna is an innovator and architect of data-driven business models, processes and services based on AI and data governance.

Our data and analytics services

Where are you on your data journey? We’ll guide and advise you based on your specific situation. Our solutions transform your data into a valuable asset.

Data strategies – the foundation for data-driven organisations

We develop holistic data strategies that combine architecture, governance and usage – for scalable and value-adding data utilisation.

  1. Data Design Thinking
Start with a Data Design Thinking workshop. We work with you to develop a comprehensive data strategy and cloud-based data architectures that are precisely tailored to your objectives. Within this framework, we design a scalable and flexible data architecture.
  2. Data Integration and Management
We integrate and harmonise your data sources, both internal and external, in the cloud. We recommend the use of data management platforms such as Catena-X and Gaia-X. This ensures data quality, security and compliance in the long term.
  3. Real-Time Analytics and AI
Intuitive business intelligence dashboards and AI enable you to make data-driven decisions. We support you – using tools – throughout the entire process, ensuring that data quality is continuously improved.
  4. Continuous Monitoring and Optimisation
With the help of efficient dashboards, you can continuously monitor the performance and security of your data solution. Flexible and scalable data structures enable the rapid implementation of further use cases, which we implement together with you.

Further services for your data strategy

  • Development of data strategies for the implementation of digitalisation projects, including the application of the ‘once-only’ principle
  • Analysis of the data ecosystem and creation of technical concepts for data analytics, data governance and data management to improve service exchange processes
  • Planning and implementation of federated data spaces and platforms in any area of public interest
  • Establishment of sovereign data infrastructures in accordance with GAIA-X guidelines
  • Evaluation, processing and integration of georeferenced data for visual representation in any application scenario
  • Implementation of a federated information and data management (FIM) system with automated collection and processing workflows featuring AI-based analysis
  • Establishment and operation of high-performance data infrastructures for the extraction, transformation, management and sharing of data in sovereign private or public cloud environments

Federated data systems – organising data in a decentralised manner

We design federated data architectures that enable decentralised responsibility, shared standards and flexible integration across domains.

In many organisations, data is generated across different departments, systems and domains. Centralised data models often reach their limits in such scenarios. Federated data systems enable decentralised responsibility for data, shared standards and governance, as well as flexible integration of heterogeneous data sources. Typical architectural approaches include data mesh, distributed data platforms, metadata and catalogue solutions, and API- and event-based data integration.

Data rooms – sharing and collaborating on data securely

We develop and implement data rooms for the secure, independent exchange of data across organisational boundaries – interoperable and trustworthy.

Data spaces enable data to be securely exchanged and shared across organisational boundaries. They support sovereign control over one’s own data, reinforce common standards and interoperability, and establish trustworthy data ecosystems and a federated infrastructure. Examples of data spaces include industrial and supply chain ecosystems, mobility and energy data spaces, public data ecosystems, and research and innovation platforms.

  • In the ForeSightNext project, Materna is working with other partners to develop a sovereign data room for energy-efficient and sustainable living.
  • In the CO2For-IT research project, Materna is participating in the development of a federated data space for sustainability monitoring in the forestry and timber industry, which will connect more than 120,000 forestry stakeholders in the future.
  • The GAIA-X 4 moveID project addresses a wide range of scenarios for intelligent traffic management. A decentralised mobility data space is being developed to enable mutual communication between the digital identities of vehicles and other components of the transport infrastructure.
  • Catena-X, the data space specialising in the automotive industry, enables standardised and secure data exchange. As a qualified consultant, Materna supports clients in navigating and establishing themselves within this advanced data ecosystem.
  • Dilapidated bridges, outdated planning, and a backlog of renovation and assessment work – Germany faces an urgent need for action regarding bridge renovations. Materna has developed a prototype for a federal data room that can serve as a planning aid for infrastructure operators such as Autobahn GmbH or Deutsche Bahn, as bridge operators, to ensure up-to-date monitoring of bridge conditions.

Geodata infrastructures – spatial reference as a basis for integration

We integrate and analyse spatially referenced data to reveal complex interrelationships – enabling informed decisions in planning, the environment and mobility.

Much data has a spatial reference. Geodata is key to integrating complex datasets. Geodata infrastructures make it possible to systematically access this data. They link data from different sources via their spatial context. Typical components include geodata platforms, mapping and visualisation systems, standardised geodata services and metadata catalogues. The fields of application are diverse, ranging from infrastructure and urban planning to environmental and climate data, logistics and mobility, as well as asset and resource management.

A concrete example: Materna, in collaboration with partners, is digitising almost the entire Bavarian state forest – comprising around 800,000 hectares of woodland – on behalf of the Bavarian State Forestry Authority. In the Forest Planning 4.0 project, the area is being mapped using camera- and laser-based aerial imagery as well as satellite imagery. Information on the composition, location and condition of the vegetation is gathered, from which measures for a more sustainable and climate-resilient forest can be derived. Image analysis and condition assessment are carried out using AI, whilst spatial analyses are performed using GIS.

Expert opinion

“Our project for a transmission system operator has demonstrated just how powerful a strategic database can be: through clearly structured data, defined rules and the targeted combination of AI and open data, we were able to reduce the manual effort involved in route safety by 97 percent. The result is significantly faster analyses, lower costs and a reliable foundation for the safe operation of critical infrastructure.”

With many years of project experience and in-depth industry knowledge, we support complex digitalisation projects from conception through to long-term implementation.

Let’s go into detail

We align business objectives with a practical architectural framework: together, we prioritise use cases, define data products, establish governance structures and design a vision for the platform and operating model. This results in a roadmap featuring quick wins and investment phases – from the initial MVP implementation through to a scalable data platform.

We provide support in designing a federal vision (domains, data products, standards), in setting up the platform and enablement layer (e.g. catalogue, CI/CD, observability), and in establishing governance and role models. This enables business units to take ownership, whilst ensuring that interoperability, quality and security remain reliably managed at a central level.

In addition to consulting and implementation, we also provide support for stable operations, including monitoring, cost and performance optimisation, security and governance processes, and the gradual expansion of further use cases. The aim is to create a platform that works in day-to-day operations and delivers continuous value.
