Business and Technology Transformation

Ensuring that strategy, organisation and processes are fit for the future and implementing transformations in a structured manner

Business Consulting

Digital transformation is not driven by new technologies alone. It requires a clear vision for business models, organisational structures and processes, as well as the ability to implement these changes consistently. Materna combines business consulting with technological expertise. We help organisations to develop strategic goals, realign their organisational structures and processes, and implement these changes using the right digital solutions. This results in sustainable transformations that bring strategy, organisation and IT together.

Our approach: thinking about business and technology as a whole

Many transformation projects fail because strategy, organisation and IT are treated as separate entities. Materna therefore takes an integrated approach. We support organisations every step of the way, from strategic planning through to successful implementation. This results in holistic transformations rather than isolated individual projects. We combine this with:

Strategic consultancy

Development of vision statements, strategies and transformation programmes

Organisational and process design

Operating models, governance, end-to-end processes and service organisations

Technical implementation

Selection, architecture and implementation of digital solutions

That’s why Materna...

Materna specialises in practical, results-driven consultancy for complex digitalisation and transformation projects. We help organisations align their strategic goals with technological opportunities and successfully drive sustainable change. We combine methodical consultancy with a deep understanding of modern technologies and develop solutions based on scalable, future-proof platforms.

Long-standing collaboration with the public sector, critical infrastructure organisations and industry

We understand the specific requirements of regulated environments and critical infrastructure, and develop solutions that ensure security, stability and compliance.

Integration into existing organisations and structures

Our consultancy services take into account established processes, organisational structures and systems, and are designed to implement change in a realistic and sustainable manner.

A selection of our projects on the strategic use of data

Healthcare services in Lower Saxony

Materna is supporting the administrative office in the digitalisation of the public health service in Lower Saxony – from concept development and project management to the coordination of key initiatives. The focus is on improving the networking of public health authorities, modernising processes and the structured implementation of a shared target architecture within the eHealth sector.

IT consultancy for IT.NRW

Materna is supporting IT.NRW in the further development of key IT management processes – including IT processes, IT portfolio management and innovation management. The aim is to strengthen governance and efficiency and to measurably increase the value that IT delivers to the organisation (using ITIL expertise, amongst other things).

Stadt Dortmund: Identifying the potential of AI

Together with Infora, Materna helped the Stadt Dortmund to identify specific ways in which artificial intelligence could be used in day-to-day administrative work – including in the context of email processing and scheduling. This has resulted in a prioritised list of use cases and a solid foundation for integrating AI into the organisation in a structured, benefits-driven and practical manner.

A service-oriented approach to pragmatic process digitalisation

The project focusing on the ‘service approach’ used the Lower Saxony State Office for Building and Property as a case study to demonstrate how digitalisation can pragmatically streamline processes, improve collaboration and reduce the workload on staff. The focus is on clear service and process interfaces, as well as implementation that delivers rapid results in day-to-day operations.

Let’s go into detail

Materna consistently combines business consulting with technological expertise to ensure that strategic objectives are translated into actionable solutions and sustainable change. We take an end-to-end approach to transformation: from strategy, organisation and processes through to implementation in platforms, applications and operating models. At the same time, we bring experience from complex projects in regulated environments and place a strong emphasis on pragmatic results that work in day-to-day operations.

We begin with the technical objectives and use these to define a vision for the organisation, processes and digital capabilities. Building on this, we design the roadmap, governance framework and operating model, and integrate these at an early stage with architectural and implementation decisions. This ensures that business requirements, technology options and implementation capabilities remain consistently aligned, and that measures can be implemented and embedded iteratively.

Materna has many years of experience in complex transformation projects, particularly in the public sector, the defence sector, sectors closely linked to critical infrastructure, and industry. It is precisely in these areas that the demands on governance, security, compliance, scalability and sustainable operations are particularly high. We draw on this expertise to set realistic targets and ensure that transformations are implemented reliably.

Our approach is modular and designed for implementation: we begin with a structured analysis (objectives, maturity level, pain points, dependencies) and use this to develop a clear vision. We then derive a prioritised roadmap, including governance, resource allocation and implementation logic. During implementation, we support programmes and projects, manage dependencies and ensure, through change and enablement measures, that the results are sustainably embedded in the organisation.

Depending on requirements, we take on key technical and methodological roles, ranging from programme and transformation management to process and organisational consultancy, and change and stakeholder management. In doing so, we work closely with business departments and IT to ensure that decisions, working methods and deliverables are aligned. Our aim is always to take the pressure off teams, provide direction and build implementation capacity.

We help you establish an effective governance framework, ranging from PMO structures and portfolio and prioritisation processes to committee structures and decision-making processes. This includes transparent status and risk management mechanisms, dependency management, and a pragmatic reporting system that enables governance rather than merely documenting progress. This ensures that objectives, resources and implementation remain under control throughout the roadmap.

Materna can provide support on an ad hoc basis or cover the entire process from start to finish. We often begin with a brief assessment or quick check to identify areas for action, the current level of maturity and priorities, including specific recommendations for the next steps. Upon request, we can then support the implementation through programmes and projects, or provide targeted assistance where short-term expertise and guidance are required.
