Best in Class – Materna named among “Leaders in AI-related Services 2026”

The analyst firm PAC has assessed the most compelling approaches to meeting growing AI demand and positioned the leading providers in a PAC INNOVATION RADAR series on “AI-related IT Services in Europe, France, Germany, and the UK 2026”. A total of 31 IT service providers relevant to the industry were analysed. Materna achieved an outstanding result as “Best in Class”. Its Sovereign AI approach and expertise in the public sector were particularly impressive.

State-of-the-art AI solutions

Artificial intelligence is realising its potential in various areas across organisations in all sectors, particularly in critical infrastructure. Materna focuses on six Sovereign AI Core Solutions.

Agent and assistance systems

AI agents and assistance systems perform tasks autonomously or semi-autonomously, thereby relieving the workload of specialist staff in a secure and transparent manner within the customer’s infrastructure. They act as team members, breaking down complex tasks into smaller parts and carrying them out independently (taking action rather than just commenting).

Service and process automation using AI

Complex processes are intelligently automated – from application submission to candidate management. Every step remains auditable and can be seamlessly integrated into existing systems. Guardrails ensure security and regulatory compliance in autonomous processes. The aim is end-to-end automation that guarantees both efficiency and compliance (getting things done rather than just managing them).

Knowledge and document management

AI analyses content in a context-based manner and makes information available in a structured form. Systems such as semantic search and AI-powered document analysis make it possible to provide quick and reliable access to expert knowledge and unstructured data, for example for service technicians or directory solutions (finding rather than searching).

Data analysis and forecasting systems

AI models identify patterns and risks at an early stage and provide accurate forecasts and strategic resource optimisation. These systems enable proactive action, for example through predictive maintenance, strategic traffic planning or fraud detection. They help businesses to identify and prevent system failures and bottlenecks at an early stage (anticipating rather than reacting).

Digital twins

The physical and digital worlds are synchronised for simulation, analysis and control within an integrated environment. Physical objects, processes and systems are integrated. Digital twins map infrastructure, forest planning or urban development, simulate movement flows and obstacles, and enable decisions based on coherent digital representations. Computer vision solutions monitor infrastructure in real time and automatically report events (coherence rather than divergence between the digital and real worlds).

Digital situation reports

Diverse data sources are consolidated into a dynamic, real-time overview, serving as the basis for assessing the overall situation and making informed decisions. Situational awareness solutions are particularly relevant in the public sector and during major incidents, as they provide a comprehensive, up-to-date picture of a situation and enable automated reporting (seeing the bigger picture).

Expert opinion

“Materna Sovereign AI Solutions help employees carry out their daily work in a legally compliant and efficient manner. It is always clear and documented where the specialist processes are running, which data is being used and how it is stored, as well as how and which AI modules are being used to provide support. Our Sovereign AI Solutions take into account all current requirements, standards and laws (EU AI Act, GDPR) and form the basis for the necessary analyses. At the same time, we use them to support simple, digital communication between citizens and businesses with the administration.”

A comprehensive approach, from strategy to operations

We support your AI projects from start to finish: from the initial use case concept through to architecture and implementation, right through to secure, scalable operation.

Best practices for successful AI projects

Using a structured approach, clearly defined roles and tried-and-tested best practices, we turn pilot ideas into productive AI solutions.

Confident, secure and compliant

We incorporate data protection, IT security and regulatory requirements (e.g. the EU AI Act and the EU Data Act) at an early stage into the design and implementation process.

Across all manufacturers – the best technology for your needs

We select platforms and tools independently and integrate them seamlessly with your existing IT infrastructure.

A selection of customer case studies and use cases

Generating product descriptions for online shops

OBI often receives product data from suppliers in an unstructured format, which requires a great deal of manual effort to maintain. Materna is helping the company to use Microsoft technologies and generative AI to automatically extract this information and integrate it into the e-commerce platform – resulting in a faster time-to-market and a reduced workload for staff.

Forest Planning 4.0 (Tree species classification using AI)

Digital mapping of forest stands using camera- and laser-based aerial imagery as well as satellite imagery, with this information being converted into innovative forestry products such as databases and visualisations that can be used for preliminary stratification and accurate mapping of the age and species composition of the stands.

Semantic Inbox

An AI assistant trained in specialist subject matter, with access to internal administrative procedures to ensure that the matter in question is handled in a legally compliant manner.

Management of visitor flows

Development of an integrated resilience management system for cross-agency planning, response and post-incident management of crisis situations for the City of Freiburg im Breisgau.

Management of dynamic stops

Dynamic stop management to coordinate the use of stops by various mobility service providers (Gaia-X 4 ROMS project).

Diagnosis of mental disorders

Development of an AI ecosystem for services aimed at therapists (e.g. analysis of data from sleep and heart rate monitors, detection of mood patterns) and patients (e.g. a chatbot providing therapeutic explanations and a food diary) as part of the DAIsy collaborative project.

Energy-efficient and cosy living

Creation of a vendor-neutral, secure and trustworthy data room (ForeSightNEXT platform) for AI-based smart living services.

Service and Operations Management

Let’s go into detail

Materna provides end-to-end support: from use case identification and AI strategy, through data and target architecture, to implementation and secure operation. Structured process models (e.g. AI roadmap) help ensure that pilot projects are quickly transformed into robust, production-ready solutions.

Depending on your security needs, regulatory requirements and IT strategy, cloud, hybrid or on-premises approaches are all possible. Materna can assist you in selecting and implementing a suitable solution, including a security and compliance framework, data management, identity management and scalable operations, so that you retain control and transparency over your AI workloads.

We integrate data protection, IT security and regulatory requirements at an early stage into the design and implementation process: through governance, risk analyses, technical guardrails, auditability, and operational processes for monitoring and continuous improvement. This results in AI solutions that work in everyday use and can be reliably verified during audits.

AI is only as good as the data it is based on. In practice, ‘perfect’ data is often not required, but rather a robust data architecture, clear data ownership and quality criteria for each use case. If the data situation is still inadequate, Materna starts with data profiling, target scenarios and quick wins (e.g. data cleansing, metadata, data access) to ensure that AI applications become reliable and scalable.
