Protecting field data: How AgIN ensures data security and sovereignty in agricultural analysis

In agriculture, the ability to transform raw data into actionable insights is a key driver of efficiency, sustainability and innovation. With the growth of digital platforms and increasing volumes of data, the agricultural sector faces the ongoing challenge of unlocking the full value of agricultural data whilst ensuring robust security and genuine data sovereignty for users. The Agricultural Interoperability Network (AgIN), initiated by the Agricultural Industry Electronics Foundation (AEF), tackles this challenge head-on.

Common Connector

At the heart of AgIN lies the Common Connector, a technical solution developed in collaboration with Materna to abstract the complexity of integration, standardise APIs and enable secure, interoperable data exchange for all participants.

Decentralised network and data sovereignty

AgIN operates on a decentralised network. Each platform – e.g. farm management systems or digital agricultural services – uses its own instance of the ‘Common Connector’ to connect. This ensures that data remains under the owner’s control at all times. Data is exchanged directly and securely between the parties involved – without a central authority. This ensures that data exchange is strictly limited to authorised users. Sensitive information is not shared beyond agreed boundaries. Users retain control over their data at all times.

Interoperability and collaboration

The network is based on standardised data exchange. The Common Connector translates proprietary data formats into uniform AgIN APIs. This enables different systems to work together seamlessly. This enables practical use cases such as machine tracking or asset sharing – even across platforms and brands. The AEF terms of use help to reduce legal complexity. A public list of compliant platforms ensures transparency, allowing partners to check their status and capabilities at any time.

Technical Fundamentals: The Common Connector

Security is the top priority. The Connector uses OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect. This ensures that all data transfers are secure, authorised and encrypted. Before use, platforms must pass automated tests using real or simulated data. This increases reliability and reduces integration risks. The Connector automatically checks the compliance and status of the platforms. A central registration system provides a clear overview.

Deployment is carried out via containers and Kubernetes templates. This enables rapid integration, flexible scaling and independent management. The architecture supports high availability and straightforward updates. The connector is regularly updated to meet new technical and regulatory requirements.

Data analysis and practical application

AgIN enables easy integration into existing systems. Standardised and secure data flows make advanced analytics possible. Stakeholders can make better use of their data – for example, to make more precise decisions or to optimise yields. By combining machine, soil and weather data, predictive maintenance, improved resource management and simpler reporting become possible. This boosts efficiency and aids regulatory compliance.

Partnership and Further Development

Materna is a development partner for the Common Connector. The company brings expertise in secure, scalable software development. In collaboration with the AEF and the AgIN community, Materna ensures that the Connector is continuously developed. Services include consultancy, integration and project partnerships. This supports platforms in the roll-out and use of AgIN.

Growing Network and Outlook

Eleven industry partners are already using the Common Connector. Initial successes show that integration is happening faster and trust is growing – thanks to transparent systems. The AgIN ecosystem is growing and bringing benefits to all stakeholders. As it becomes more widespread, businesses will be able to play an active role in shaping connected agriculture. The aim is to establish a standard for secure data exchange and intelligent use.
