Ready for your online ID card? Simply order your PIN online

As part of the implementation of the Online Access Act (OZG), an increasing number of public services are becoming available online. Anyone with an electronic identity card with an activated eID not only saves themselves a trip to the local authority office to verify their identity, but also avoids the hassle of filling in their address details on forms. Once you have registered once with Servicekonto.NRW or the Federal User Account (bund.ID), it is even possible to log in to all connected online services using just a password. Form data is then automatically generated from the verified identity card details stored centrally in the service account.

Digital applications are now available for many public services, such as requesting criminal record certificates, pension statements or driving licence penalty points in Flensburg. Applications for BAföG, ELSTER registration or access to Stasi files – implemented by Materna – can now be made online, as can, in some towns, the registration or deregistration of a motor vehicle. Since the amendments to the Registration Act came into force on 1 January 2020, you can even check in to a hotel conveniently using your electronic ID card, without having to fill in a registration form at reception.

You can find all the services currently available here: ID Card Portal – Service Search. All you need to use the linked online services is the ID Card app, your PIN and a compatible mobile phone that can read the ID card.

But which PIN, exactly? More often than not, this PIN – or the initial PIN letter sent out when the new ID card was issued – has disappeared somewhere at home, lost in the shuffle. But it’s time to dig it out. Can’t find your PIN and need to apply for a new one?  This is now possible via a new service at www.pin-ruecksetzbrief-bestellen.de, without having to book an appointment at the local authority office. With this new service, you can order your PIN reset letter online and activate the online ID function retrospectively. You can use your own smartphone as a card reader for this. You can then complete some administrative tasks online – which is a great relief, particularly given the current, pandemic-related difficulties in securing appointments.
