In February 2022, the best e-learning projects of the previous year were honoured with the eLearning AWARD 2022. From among more than 300 entries, Materna TMT GmbH emerged as a successful contender with three winning projects. With its innovative client projects, the specialist in digital learning and media production won the eLearning AWARD 2022 in the categories ‘IT Training’, ‘Accessible Training’ and ‘Didactics’. A panel of experts from the eLearning Journal presents the award annually to state-of-the-art projects from across the DACH region.
The e-learning solutions from Materna TMT that have now received awards are based on modern IT technologies and scientifically sound didactic concepts, and were developed for various areas of application – including public administration and the automotive industry.
Software emulator takes first place in the “IT Training” category
For a particularly innovative training method designed to support the introduction of electronic administration – comprising the e-file, the e-folder and replacement scanning – at around 112,000 workstations within the state administration of North Rhine-Westphalia, Materna TMT was awarded the eLearning AWARD 2022 in the ‘IT Training’ category. The software emulator, newly developed on behalf of the CIO of North Rhine-Westphalia and led by the State Agency for Information and Technology North Rhine-Westphalia (IT.NRW) in collaboration with Materna TMT, is a flexible, web-based framework that enables complex software training in the area of the e-file, including the post folder and file archiving – regardless of the existing IT systems. The e-workflow folder is a workflow tool used for coordination processes within the North Rhine-Westphalian state administration. Using graphical user interfaces, the emulator replicates entire IT systems and the software running on them, including a defined selection of functionalities and interrelationships. By continuously and easily adapting the emulator to the latest developments in e-government components, IT.NRW is able, for example, to deliver training to state employees based on the current state of development. The emulator is accessible to the North Rhine-Westphalia state administration via a browser-based collaboration platform.
Accessible e-learning courses for the State of North Rhine-Westphalia
In the ‘Accessible Training’ category, Materna TMT received an award for the first-ever fully accessible e-learning format, which has been certified in accordance with BITV 2.0 (Accessible Information Technology Ordinance). The e-learning courses developed by Materna TMT for the State of North Rhine-Westphalia as part of the roll-out of electronic administration – commissioned by the CIO of North Rhine-Westphalia and led by IT.NRW – feature a variety of learning formats and simulations that are – are accessible and comprehensible. Key accessibility criteria met by the award-winning e-learning courses include optimised contrast, zoomable and screen-reader-compatible content, and keyboard accessibility. In total, around 112,000 users across 258 public authorities can use the e-learning programme to prepare effectively for the changes to their day-to-day work resulting from the introduction of the e-file and e-case file. By early 2022, over 10,000 users were already working productively with the core components of e-administration, and over 40,000 employees are currently on their way to doing so. Thanks to the support provided by the e-learning programme, this development remained flexibly accessible even during periods of working from home, thus representing a modern extension of IT.NRW’s training provision.
VR meta-model for Schaeffler wins in the ‘didactics’ category
Materna TMT has collaborated with the automotive and industrial supplier Schaeffler to develop a didactic meta-model designed to deliver learning content in VR environments even more effectively and sustainably. The virtual reality training complements Schaeffler’s face-to-face, e-learning and blended learning programmes. The interdisciplinary meta-model can be applied to a wide range of VR training scenarios and courses. As such, VR training makes a significant contribution to the initial and continuing training of Schaeffler’s employees. The technology can also be used for soft skills training. The jury of the eLearning Journal has described the development of a comprehensive VR meta-model as an important pioneering achievement.
