Materna secures competitive advantages in the aviation sector through a rebranding

Materna IPS GmbH to become an independent subsidiary of the Materna Group from September 2020

After more than 30 successful years in the international market for automated passenger handling at airports, the Materna Group is spinning off its aviation brand, Intelligent Passenger Solutions (IPS), into a new, independent limited liability company (GmbH) with effect from 1 September 2020. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of Materna Information & Communications SE, Materna IPS GmbH will drive the aviation business forward independently. The leading self-bag-drop provider is focusing even more specifically on the growth markets within passenger handling.

From 1 September, Materna IPS GmbH will operate as an independent subsidiary of the Materna Group. Its portfolio continues to encompass all existing hardware and software solutions, as well as services for airports and airlines. Materna IPS remains closely linked to its parent company, Materna SE, but is aligning its structures and processes specifically with the international market and its global customer base.

Its exclusive focus on the aviation sector, the use of its own resources and faster processes ensure further competitive advantages for Materna IPS in the future. With this spin-off, Materna IPS can build on its specific strengths even more effectively and implement international client projects with even greater agility. In addition to its specialist expertise in product development, the independence of its sales and service team – which operates closely with customers worldwide – ensures that individual customer requirements are met even more effectively. The aim is to further build on the successes achieved to date in the self-service sector, the fastest-growing segment of the passenger business at airports and for airlines. Materna IPS is already present in the key growth markets with its renowned self-service solutions and, with this new subsidiary, is strategically setting the course for future growth.

Martin Wibbe, CEO and Chairman of the Executive Board of Materna Information & Communications SE: “Materna IPS is growing steadily and already has more than 800 installations worldwide, including at major airports such as Toronto Pearson in Canada and Bangalore Airport in India. The most recent projects include the installation of equipment at Tokyo Haneda Airport in Japan and one of the largest self-service bag drop installations at Denver Airport in the USA. Materna IPS is well prepared for its spin-off as an independent company. The outlook for the coming years in this market segment is very promising, despite the coronavirus pandemic.”

“Our company’s independence paves the way for our continued successful development and long-term success in the aviation industry,” says Dr Georg Oschmann, Managing Director of Materna IPS GmbH. “As a wholly-owned subsidiary of Materna Information & Communications SE, we continue to enjoy the financial stability on which our customers can rely. At the same time, we can focus fully on our growth markets in North America, India and Japan, on the increasing volume of projects in Europe and the implementation of further major projects, whilst responding flexibly to market changes. I am very much looking forward to helping shape the future of modern passenger handling together with my long-standing team, our customers and partners.”
