Materna opens a new site in Koblenz dedicated to defence and digital sovereignty

Expansion of the company’s presence near key clients in the Bundeswehr and public administration

Materna Information & Communications SE officially opened its new premises in Koblenz on 18 May 2026. This move marks a further expansion of the company’s collaboration with clients from the German Armed Forces and the public sector. The aim is to provide closer on-site support for complex digitalisation projects and to implement them in collaboration with clients.

Digital capability as a security policy priority

“This turning point in security policy is also a digital challenge,” said Michael Hagedorn, CEO of the Materna Group, at the opening. “Today, a state’s capacity to act stems from digital architectures, reliable data sets and the ability to make well-founded decisions even under pressure. We are making targeted investments in these capabilities and taking on responsibility in areas where digital solutions must function reliably even under pressure.”

Solutions for use in security-related areas

In future, 23 staff members at the Koblenz site will develop and operate solutions for use in security-related areas. These include situational overviews drawn from distributed data sources, secure communication channels and digital systems for command and control and logistics processes. They provide transparency regarding resources, transport routes and the condition of infrastructure, thereby enabling coordinated decision-making even under time pressure. The decision to base the operation in Koblenz was a deliberate one, as the proximity to key Bundeswehr and administrative facilities ensures short lines of communication for collaboration and implementation.

On-site operational responsibility

Ulrich Bötzel, Senior Vice President Defence, will in future also oversee his activities from the Koblenz site. He emphasised the site’s focus: “Koblenz stands for operational responsibility. Here, we develop solutions that function even under crisis conditions – from situational awareness to robust processes and secure communication.”

The role of digital systems was also highlighted from a security policy perspective. In his keynote speech, Major General (ret.) Dr Michael Färber spoke about the importance of digital sovereignty for modern security and defence structures, as well as the need for interoperable and resilient systems. “The digitalisation of security-related structures is increasingly becoming the foundation of digital sovereignty,” said Färber.
