Materna is strategically realigning its Defence division

The Materna Group is strategically realigning its cyber and IT activities in the defence sector, thereby strengthening its position as a reliable partner to the Bundeswehr. The focus is on expanding deployable, high-availability IT systems, the digitalisation of military command and support processes, and the development of secure platform solutions for use both at home and abroad.

The demands placed on the armed forces are constantly changing – driven, amongst other things, by cyber threats, hybrid conflicts and international operations. To meet these challenges with resilient, scalable IT solutions, Materna is establishing clear structures and strengthening the Defence division within its Public Sector division.

A key component of this reorganisation is the consolidation of all Defence activities under a dedicated management structure. With effect from April 2025, Ulrich Bötzel has taken over as Senior Vice President of the newly created Defence division. Ulrich Bötzel brings extensive experience from IT architecture projects for the Bundeswehr and was most recently a member of the executive board at CONET Solutions GmbH.

“The Bundeswehr’s digital sovereignty is a key issue for the future – both for our national security and in the context of international alliances,” says CEO Michael Hagedorn. “With this reorganisation in the Defence division, we are laying the foundations to further develop our technological expertise and consultancy capabilities in a targeted manner.”

Materna has been supporting the Bundeswehr for many years with specialised IT solutions – ranging from situation analysis and threat prevention to secure communication systems, reporting systems and inter-ministerial cooperation. With this new structure, Materna is further driving forward the development of innovative, operationally ready IT systems – and making an active contribution to the security of Germany and its partners.
