Materna and deepset are strengthening cutting-edge AI made in Germany

Partnership combines European AI technology with implementation expertise for secure applications in production environments

deepset stands for European AI development with high technological relevance. The company was founded in 2018 and, with Haystack, has established an open framework that serves as the AI orchestration standard in the Deutschland-Stack (Source: technologie.deutschland-stack.gov.de/). Haystack provides the technological foundation for seamlessly integrating language models with proprietary knowledge and using them to develop robust AI applications without uncontrollably transferring sensitive information to external model environments. In this way, deepset fulfills a key requirement for building trustworthy AI applications that are flexible, transparent, and independent of individual vendors. The Haystack Enterprise Platform builds on this foundation and offers the features necessary for scaling AI applications, such as a developer interface, governance tools, and operational management.

This is particularly relevant for government agencies and organizations with high standards for data protection, traceability, and control. They can use AI without relinquishing control over data, knowledge sources, and operating environments. In this context, sovereign AI deployment means that sensitive information remains under control, results are based on traceable sources, and applications can be embedded into existing governance, security, and compliance structures. Applications can be implemented in various operating models - ranging from sovereign cloud environments to operation within in-house or controlled infrastructures.

The partnership focuses on the journey from concept to a reliable, usable AI solution. Many organizations are currently testing individual AI applications but face the challenge of integrating them securely, cost-effectively, and sustainably into their day-to-day operations. Materna and deepset are taking an approach that combines technological openness with proven implementation expertise. Materna brings concrete experience from the productive use of robust AI solutions at federal and state agencies - such as AI-based agent and assistance systems that support specialists in knowledge-intensive tasks, securely access internal information, and operate in controlled IT environments. Haystack is also in productive use in municipalities, as well as at the federal and state levels, to improve application processes. Haystack Enterprise forms the foundation of the AI@EC platform developed by deepset in collaboration with the European Commission.

“Materna brings many years of experience in consulting, implementation, and operation of solutions for the public sector,” says Johannes Rosenboom, SVP of Sales for the Public and KRITIS Sectors at Materna. deepset complements this strength with modern AI technology, rapid development, and a clear focus on production-ready applications. Together, the partners are creating a foundation that enables government agencies and regulated organizations not only to experiment with AI, but also to deploy it responsibly and at scale.

“Sovereign AI will only become truly significant when organizations can deploy it in production on their own terms. Together with Materna, we are bringing open, European AI technology to precisely those environments where control, trust, and reliability matter most,” says Milos Rusic, CEO and co-founder of deepset.

This partnership thus underscores the commitment to integrating digital sovereignty and innovative strength: with European technology, a strong integration partner, and clear benefits for organizations that wish to incorporate artificial intelligence into their processes securely and effectively.
