With effect from 22 December 2021, the Materna Group has acquired the Krefeld-based company TraffGo Road GmbH, which specialises in IT solutions for the processing of traffic data. Materna operates successfully in the market for mobility solutions and, in collaboration with TraffGo Road, has already developed the German Traffic Control Centre (VZD) for the federal government’s Autobahn GmbH, which will coordinate traffic management nationwide in future – together with the eight other traffic control centres. With the acquisition of TraffGo Road, Materna is further expanding its position in this market segment on a long-term basis and addressing customers such as federal authorities, state administrations, and towns and local authorities through a joint market approach.
“TraffGo Road possesses highly specialised expertise in the field of mobility solutions, which we will use to further expand our portfolio in a targeted manner, for example in the areas of geoinformation systems and floating car data analysis. We will work together to further strengthen TraffGo’s excellent market and partner network in line with our partner ecosystem,” explains Martin Wibbe, CEO of the Materna Group.
“TraffGo Road GmbH has built up a strong reputation over the last 20 years through numerous projects. As part of the Materna Group, TraffGo can now focus primarily on the strategic and substantive development of its portfolio,” says Dr Joachim Wahle, managing partner of TraffGo Road GmbH, explaining the sale.
TraffGo Road GmbH was founded in 2001 by Dr Joachim Wahle. The company develops intelligent IT concepts and IT solutions for local and regional authorities in the field of multimodal traffic information, as well as for the automated processing, analysis and visualisation of large traffic databases. The Krefeld-based company continually adopts and implements innovative concepts, such as the ‘payment guide’, which allows parking fines to be paid directly via mobile using PayPal or other payment services. Since October 2021, TraffGo has been operating smart loading bays (the Smala project) for the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, where delivery vans can pre-book short-term parking spaces.
TraffGo Road works for clients such as the federal government’s Autobahn GmbH, the Berlin Senate Department for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection, and the transport ministries of various federal states. For Smartparking, an initiative for digital car park management, TraffGo Road manages mobile parking in over 250 towns and cities across Germany and Austria.
Materna continues to expand its mobility solutions
Innovative transport concepts require a wide range of data from a variety of sources. To enable the various stakeholders – ranging from the Federal Ministry of Transport, through state authorities, local authorities and private associations, to rail operators, logistics companies and the automotive industry – to exchange their data for mutual benefit, innovative IT solutions are required to intelligently process, prepare and visualise the data. Materna is already successfully active in this market for mobility solutions and is strengthening its commitment through the acquisition of TraffGo.
One of Materna’s most important projects in the field of mobility solutions is the mobility data marketplace, through which various stakeholders – such as the federal government, the states, local authorities and private providers – can exchange traffic information for mutual benefit. Another project is the German Traffic Control Centre, which has been online since December 2021.
