High honour for Materna employee Philipp Schneidenbach

A great honour for Philipp Schneidenbach: the IEEE professional association has appointed the Materna employee as a Senior Member. Only around ten per cent of the scientists and researchers in this world-renowned professional association hold this title in recognition of their lifetime achievements.

The IEEE is a global professional association of engineers, technicians, scientists and those in related professions in the fields of electrical engineering and information technology. As a standards organisation, the IEEE is a household name and has become renowned for pioneering developments such as Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11) and FireWire (IEEE 1394). Across more than 190 countries, around 500,000 members are active in ten regions, working towards the goal of ‘Advancing Technology for Humanity’.

“My first contact with the IEEE was many years ago. It was an invitation to speak, as my research in the field of autonomous driving and product certification had come to their attention. Shortly afterwards, I had the opportunity to contribute my expertise in the fields of architecture and medical device compliance to an IEEE working group. We are now developing a future standard for the identification of medical data, which transcends national borders and systems and is being driven forward in collaboration with various university professors from Florida and Malta. My most recent involvement has been in the field of ethics and AI, where, following a collaboration with Eindhoven University, a global team of experts is now working on a standard for a framework to qualify corporate ethics committees on AI. “I was most recently entrusted with chairing the sub-group on framework design,” says Philipp Schneidenbach, who heads the EAM Competence Centre in his day-to-day work at Materna, has more than 25 years’ professional experience, and has published numerous white papers, specialist articles and several books.

Involvement in professional associations is always a voluntary role, which requires dedication and commitment beyond one’s day-to-day work. International research also means that meeting times can often be inconvenient – because even with rolling schedules, it is not always possible to find a time that suits everyone.
