Girls’ Day 2024: A day full of IT insights for young schoolgirls

Today, on the official Girls’ Day 2024, Materna invited young girls from Year 8 onwards to take a look behind the scenes at an IT company and immerse themselves in the exciting world of software development. Under the slogan “Do you find computer science boring? Then come and join us!”, the event took place at the Dortmund site and showed the twenty schoolgirls just how varied and dynamic careers in information technology can be.

Girls’ Day, in which companies across Germany take part, serves as a career guidance initiative for schoolgirls, particularly for professions in which women are under-represented. At Materna, the girls enjoyed a varied day packed with insights into the world of IT.

From consulting and software development to the design of e-learning modules – in a format modelled on “job speed dating”, female employees from Materna presented a wide variety of IT career fields. Among other things, the young participants learnt how companies protect themselves against hackers, how to design a good online shop, and how digital learning works.

A highlight of the day were the hands-on workshops. Here, the girls had the chance to write their first lines of code and design websites under guidance. A particular challenge was the programming challenge, which the young talents mastered with flying colours. The event was rounded off with tips on writing effective job applications, as well as information essential for school work placements or apprenticeships.

Materna will be taking part in Girls’ Day again next year and hopes to inspire young talent to join the IT sector.
