Digital sovereignty does not mean independence: How Europe is bringing dependencies under control

Digital sovereignty is often equated with technological independence. Yet in an interconnected digital world, complete independence is hardly realistic. What matters far more is recognising dependencies, being able to assess risks, and remaining capable of taking action even under changing conditions. In this Expert View, Toon Kockx, Client Partner EU and Branch Manager at Materna Belgium B.V. in Brussels, discusses why Europe should view digital sovereignty more as a capability and what role concepts such as reversibility, ‘exit by design’ and ‘exit literacy’ play in this context.
