Next Level IoT – from technology to value creation

In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has evolved from initial hype into a mature technology that offers businesses far-reaching potential. Whilst many businesses are still grappling with the challenge of effectively integrating the IoT into their business processes, the possibilities are clear: the IoT not only enables increased efficiency and cost reductions, but also opens up opportunities for new business models. However, to realise this potential, companies must continuously refine their processes, strategies and business models.

IoT data as a valuable resource

The IoT data collected is more than just a by-product of the technology. It forms the basis for new, innovative business models and can create significant added value. However, to realise the full potential of IoT data, it is not enough simply to connect devices and generate data. Rather, it requires a shift in mindset: the data must be generated in a targeted manner and with a clear vision in order to subsequently unlock a wide range of applications and business opportunities. Data should not be viewed as a by-product, but as a valuable resource whose potential is harnessed from the outset.

Value Innovation through IoT Data

One way to maximise the potential of IoT data is through ‘value innovation’. This means that companies use the data they collect beyond its conventional scope – for example, to develop new products or services. One example of this is agriculture, where IoT data from sensors in fields is used to make precise predictions about crop yields and to develop individualised irrigation plans that optimise water consumption whilst increasing yields. Such data-driven solutions enable farmers to work in a more resource-efficient manner, boost efficiency and respond to changes in real time, leading to higher productivity and better yields.

Through the systematic collection, analysis and interpretation of IoT data, companies can gain deeper insights into existing processes and continuously improve them. At the same time, this opens up entirely new business opportunities that can be addressed with innovative and bespoke offerings. Another example from the logistics sector demonstrates how IoT data, combined with GPS technology, is used to optimise supply chains. Here, real-time data on the location and condition of delivery vehicles and goods is collected to produce more accurate delivery time forecasts, identify maintenance requirements at an early stage, or reduce fuel consumption. These data-driven solutions can not only improve the efficiency of logistics processes but also enhance customer service through more accurate deliveries and more transparent tracking options.

The importance of the right advice

Developing new business models based on IoT data requires far more than technical knowledge. It requires the ability to put these ideas into practice, and sound consultancy that combines both strategic and practical expertise. Many consultancy firms offer theoretical concepts for developing digital business models, but without the necessary implementation and business case perspective, success is often elusive. Companies must find partners who not only understand the technologies, but are also able to translate them into concrete, working solutions. Only in this way can the full value of IoT data be realised.

Partnerships for sustainable success

A successful IoT transformation process requires not only the collection and analysis of data, but also the ability to generate it in a targeted manner and make it usable for various business processes. Business models are only as good as the data on which they are based. Companies can access data at a later stage and attempt to gain insights from it through analysis. However, the far more effective approach is to focus on the targeted generation of high-quality data sets right from the start. This allows data to be generated that is valuable not only for a specific use case, but for a wide range of applications.

A key factor in the quality of this data is the use of edge devices. These enable data to be captured directly at the source and processed in real time. Thanks to decentralised processing, only relevant and filtered data is forwarded to central systems, which increases efficiency and reduces latency. This results in data sets that are not only more precise but also of higher quality, and which can be used in a variety of ways.

Companies that have the right partners at their side can ensure that this data is of high value right from the moment it is generated. Such partnerships help to generate high-quality datasets that form the basis for innovative solutions and ensure long-term success.

Conclusion

The Internet of Things (IoT) offers businesses enormous opportunities, but these can only be realised if IoT data is not merely collected, but specifically generated and utilised. Successful business models are based on high-quality, well-considered data that goes beyond mere analysis. By utilising edge devices and forming strategic partnerships, companies can ensure that, right from the start, they generate data that is valuable not only for current needs but also for future requirements.

With the right advice and support, companies can unlock the full potential of their IoT data and thus achieve long-term, sustainable success.
