What are hybrid chatbots?

Hybrid virtual assistants combine the advantages of traditional rule-based systems with the advanced capabilities of generative AI. Whilst rule-based chatbots rely on pre-written dialogues created entirely by hand, generative approaches use specialised Transformer models and LLMs (Large Language Models) to generate human-like responses autonomously. By combining these two approaches, hybrid chatbots can respond to user enquiries with both precision and flexibility.

The challenge of non-linear dialogue design

Designing non-linear dialogues using static dialogue trees is extremely labour-intensive and stylistically challenging. Every response to be output by the chatbot must integrate reasonably seamlessly into the previous dialogue history between the bot and the user, without the system actually having any knowledge of the previous utterances made by either party. The system merely recognises intents and entities via Natural Language Understanding (NLU) and, provided the recognition rate is sufficiently high, then outputs the appropriate response. A perfect, natural conversation is therefore never possible.

The role of generative AI

A generative AI-based language model, on the other hand, can handle human communication perfectly. It can respond individually to human language and the conversation with the other person, recognise context, draw conclusions, make references to previous points, elaborate on specific issues and answer follow-up questions. This capability enables a fluent and natural conversation to take place. However, generative AI is prone to hallucinations, which means that a statement is not always 100 per cent reliable. This poses a risk when companies deploy a chatbot on whose responses customers rely. Furthermore, with a purely generative model, one always relinquishes a degree of control over the course of the dialogue and the content conveyed. Conversations could therefore veer off in an undesirable direction. For companies with strict guidelines or clear expectations regarding tone, choice of words and conversation content, a higher degree of reliability is required.

The solution: hybrid chatbots

A hybrid model combines the advantages of both approaches and largely eliminates the disadvantages. Materna’s hybrid chatbots use pre-defined responses to specific topics or questions, which can be stored, for example, in a static dialogue node structure or a Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) database. Using generative AI, the information and phrasing contained therein are embedded into individual conversational contexts and stylistically adapted to the language style of the respective user. This conveys the feeling of natural human communication without relinquishing control over the content and the flow of the dialogue.

Advantages of hybrid chatbots

  1. Improved accuracy and flexibility: Hybrid chatbots utilise the strengths of both systems. Rule-based components ensure accurate and consistent answers to frequently asked questions, whilst generative AI is capable of handling more complex and unexpected enquiries.
  2. Personalised interactions: Through the use of generative AI, hybrid chatbots can provide personalised responses based on the user’s context and preferences. This leads to an improved user experience and higher customer satisfaction.
  3. Increased efficiency: Hybrid chatbots can reduce the workload for human staff by automatically handling routine enquiries. This allows staff to focus on more complex tasks.
  4. Scalability: Hybrid chatbots can be easily scaled to handle a large number of enquiries simultaneously without compromising the quality of the responses.

Conclusion: Hybrid chatbots as a future-proof solution

Hybrid chatbots offer a high degree of flexibility, control and user-friendliness – thereby combining the best of both worlds. They enable scalable, consistent and, at the same time, context-aware interactions that meet both the needs of users and the operational requirements of businesses or public authorities. As an experienced provider of intelligent chatbot solutions, Materna uses hybrid assistance systems to create a reliable way of making digital customer communication efficient, secure and of a high linguistic standard.
