Gaia-X 4 Future Mobility becomes a Lighthouse Project

The European Gaia-X 4 Future Mobility initiative is providing key impetus for the transformation of the mobility sector. On 15 March 2023, the project family was awarded ‘Lighthouse Project’ status at the meeting of the European Gaia-X Community in Vienna. Find out what’s new from our participating sub-projects.

At the Market-X Conference & Expo in Vienna, the Institute for AI Security (DLR) was awarded Lighthouse Project status for the Gaia-X 4 Future Mobility project family. This will ensure high visibility in future for the six projects involved, which the DLR coordinates as lead partner, and which focus on the Gaia-X-based implementation of future mobility applications. The projects will be showcased on the AISBL’s websites, amongst other platforms. In addition, the projects will be showcased at various trade fairs and events in the fields of mobility and data spaces, for example at the IAA 2023 in Munich, as well as internationally. The designation of the Gaia-X 4 Future Mobility project family as a Lighthouse Project underlines the high standing and importance of this project for Europe.

We have already reported here on the blog about the sub-projects ‘Gaia-X 4 ROMS’ and ‘Gaia-X 4 moveID’, in which Materna is involved through its activities and project outcomes. In the moveID project, the city of Wolfsburg has now become a test bed for a use case in the field of smart parking. A use case within the Gaia-X 4 ROMS project is currently being trialled in Hamburg.

Smart parking is one of the focus areas within the ‘Wolfsburg Digital Mobility Testbed’. As the home of one of the world’s leading car manufacturers, the city is ideally suited to testing new, forward-looking mobility solutions and offers a unique urban test bed environment. Time savings, sustainability and the effective use of transport infrastructure are compelling benefits in the field of smart parking.

In our use case, a vehicle is on its way to Wolfsburg. It is equipped with a Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) and, thanks to its connection to a data space, is able to predict its arrival time at its destination in Wolfsburg and share this information with selected data services. At the same time, it initiates a comprehensive smart parking service. This service handles the selection and reservation of a parking space, navigates the vehicle into the car park and calculates the total charge. In the event of foreseeable delays, the entire process is automatically reorganised. From this scenario, initial data exchange relationships for data-sharing concepts and a ‘moveID data room’ can be derived. The plan is to implement the ‘Smart Parking’ use case as a Minimum Viable Demonstrator (MVD) by the IAA 2023 in September.

‘Bus Stop Management’ use case in Hamburg

The Gaia-X 4 ROMS project is currently carrying out technical evaluations of, amongst other things, federation service technologies for transport infrastructure management and the operation of autonomous vehicle fleets. Together with its project partners, Materna has devised a preliminary solution in which bus stops are made available to third-party users, such as delivery services and mobility providers, whilst they are not in use by buses. In collaboration with Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein GmbH (VHH), the aim is to make data available across organisational boundaries in order to develop innovative transport services. Examples of this range from a traffic flow monitor or bus stop usage monitor to booking services and specific situational overviews for remote operations management of VHH buses. Static data from transport and spatial infrastructure, as well as dynamic data from traffic light sequences, traffic flow data and bus position data, will be combined with data from delivery services and mobility service providers. The Minimum Viable Demonstrator (MVD) use case ‘Bus Stop Management’ forms part of the final use case for the remote operations of autonomous vehicle fleets.
