1. Challenges, Vision and Foundations
The digitalisation of agriculture has so far been held back by fragmented, isolated solutions and incompatible data silos. Despite numerous digital offerings, there is often a lack of genuine interfaces and common standards, which hinders innovation and collaboration. With CEADS, the EU is, for the first time, pursuing a holistic approach to create a common agricultural data space. In parallel, AgIN – initiated and implemented by the AEF – already offers concrete solutions to these challenges.
CEADS forms part of the EU’s data strategy and aims to enable secure, federated and interoperable data use in agriculture. Stakeholders benefit from:

- Competitiveness
- Preservation of data sovereignty
The roadmap ranges from pilot projects to large-scale roll-out and provides for transparent governance structures. AgIN relies on a decentralised, standards-based network approach that overcomes technical and legal hurdles. A standardised Data Sharing Agreement facilitates trust, compliance and onboarding, making AgIN a viable, practice-oriented example for CEADS. The experience gained from AgIN feeds directly into use cases such as ‘Enhancing Machinery Data Sharing across Europe’.
As a development partner, Materna plays a key role in supporting the technical implementation of AgIN and the Common Connector, whilst the AEF contributes its expertise as a consortium partner in CEADS – particularly in the ‘Technical Infrastructure’ work package and in the use case ‘Enhancing Machinery Data Sharing across Europe’.
2. AgIN Common Connector, Technology and Practical Examples
The Common Connector, developed in collaboration with Materna, abstracts the complexity of interoperability, trust management and secure data exchange. A central platform list enables participants to identify other platforms and provides information on conformity certifications and supported use cases.
Technical highlights:
- Secure data exchange via OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect
- Containerised deployment with Kubernetes templates for independent operation
- Conformity assessment and certification as a separate process carried out by the AEF
- Support for industry standards such as ISOBUS DDI
- Continuous development to address new use cases and regulatory requirements
The benefits of AgIN are evident in practice:
- Machinery and fleet management:
Farmers can efficiently track and monitor their machinery regardless of brand or platform. This improves utilisation, ensures manufacturer independence and gives users the freedom to choose the platform that suits them best. - Work order and task management:
In future, the exchange of work orders and associated documentation will be seamless and standardised across platforms. Full implementation of this use case is planned for 2026.
Furthermore, AgIN can be flexibly expanded, for example to accommodate new business models, AI-supported analyses or integration with cross-sector data rooms – thereby creating a future-proof foundation for innovation and growth.
3. Added Value for Stakeholders
CEADS and AgIN offer numerous benefits for various stakeholders. From a technical perspective, standardised APIs enable rapid integration and seamless data exchange. The robust security architecture and scalable infrastructure ensure that future requirements and use cases are also catered for.
