Catena-X: A revolution in data exchange within the automotive industry

Catena-X represents a milestone for the automotive industry: this data room, specialised for the sector, enables standardised and secure data exchange. This initiative underlines the shift towards decentralised data control and promotes trust and security within the network. As a qualified consultancy, Materna supports companies in navigating and establishing themselves within this advanced data ecosystem.

Catena-X is based on GAIA-X technologies. The aim is to enable OEMs and suppliers to exchange data securely, in a decentralised and standardised manner. The major benefit here is that no single market-dominating platform controls the data for the entire industry. Instead, each company retains control over its own data and decides specifically which information is shared with whom. Furthermore, mandatory identification within the Catena-X data space ensures that companies always know with whom they are sharing their data.

The added value of Catena-X

Catena-X is specifically tailored to the needs of the automotive industry and offers customised data standards. This simplifies data exchange, as companies no longer need to maintain individual interfaces for each OEM network, and the standards (semantic models) defined by Catena-X e.V. enable a simpler and more efficient flow of data. This means that, in future, data exchange will no longer have to take place via a multitude of point-to-point connections, but rather a genuine data network will emerge. Another particularly exciting prospect is the future possibility of linking data from other economic sectors, such as agriculture or finance, thereby generating new added value for customers.

Current use cases

Data exchange between companies currently enables several use cases. Among other things, long-term added value can be created through the following use cases:

  • Golden Record – Simple master data management: The concept behind the Golden Record is strikingly simple: each company maintains its own master data record. Catena-X uses standards and trust within the network to ensure that this master data can also be used by all other organisations. If, for example, a supplier’s bank details change, this is communicated directly to all connected companies via the Golden Record, without anyone being able to see who these connected companies are or without the need to set up complex interfaces with the companies’ ERP systems.
  • Supply chain transparency through digital twins: With the help of digital twins, entire supply chains can be made transparent without revealing critical details, such as supplier relationships. This transparency can be used, for example, to meet the requirements of the Supply Chain Act (LkSG) or, in the event of quality issues, to identify specifically which components, vehicles or vehicle owners are affected, rather than placing entire model ranges under general suspicion.
  • Product Carbon Footprint – Transparency regarding greenhouse gas emissions: Furthermore, Catena-X enables companies along the supply chain to record the total CO₂ emissions generated by the components required to produce a single part. At an aggregated level, this provides, for example, precise figures on the carbon footprint of a new car.
