Materna and Neo4j enter into a strategic partnership for graph intelligence and explainable AI

Expanding expertise in networked data analysis in safety-critical and regulated environments

Materna Information & Communications SE and Neo4j, provider of the graph intelligence platform of the same name, have entered into a strategic partnership. Through this collaboration, Materna is expanding its portfolio to include solutions for the structured analysis of highly interconnected data in demanding application areas.

Connected data as the basis for robust decision-making

Graph databases link heterogeneous data and establish relationships between them. They overcome isolated data silos and focus on the connections between the data. This reveals correlations, dependencies and patterns that often remain hidden in traditional data models. Particularly in safety-critical and regulated environments, this transparency is an essential prerequisite for robust and traceable decisions.

Whether in supply chains, IT service management, the maintenance of technical systems, or in security and defence-related scenarios – linked data models enable faster analysis of complex structures and lay the foundation for resilient organisational processes.

“Many of our projects operate in sensitive and business-critical areas. In such contexts, data must be structured, transparent and reliably usable. With Neo4j, we are further expanding our expertise in mapping complex relationships in a comprehensible manner and deploying AI responsibly,” says Michael Hagedorn, CEO of the Materna Group.

Graph technology and AI working together

Additional value is created by combining graph technology and artificial intelligence. Knowledge graphs structure knowledge and provide the context for AI systems. This enables applications to recognise relationships, classify results in a comprehensible manner and base decisions on a transparent foundation – a crucial factor in regulated and security-relevant sectors.

“Many organisations and public authorities are currently struggling to put GenAI pilot projects into practice. What is often missing is a robust knowledge foundation covering data, events and decision-making processes – a digital memory that provides AI systems with guidance and traceability. This is central to scaling AI in real-world applications and building AI agents. Together with Materna, we are specifically applying our graph technology to demanding fields of application and helping to ensure precise and traceable results,” explains Thorsten Stockmann, Sales Director Public Sector DACH at Neo4j.

Neo4j is part of the Deutschland-Stack, which is being developed under the leadership of the federal government and is intended to serve as a sovereign national technology platform for the digitalisation of public administration. The aim is to provide binding standards, basic components and shared services in future, in order to implement digital solutions for the federal government, the states and local authorities more quickly nationwide.

Contribution to strategic development within the framework of Elevate

The partnership focuses on applications in the public sector, the defense sector, and scenarios related to combating financial crime and fraud. Through this collaboration, Materna is systematically expanding its expertise in the areas of artificial intelligence, platform-based transformation, and business resilience. This partnership thus directly contributes to the strategic direction outlined in the Elevate strategy program. Elevate brings together the further development of the organization, portfolio, and market presence, and focuses on sustainable, profitable expansion as well as the reliable implementation of ambitious digitalization projects.
