Sustainability and CSR

For us as a family business, sustainability is firmly anchored in our DNA - ecologically, economically and socially.

Sustainability and CSR

As a family-run business, thinking in terms of generations – and, in that sense, our commitment to a functioning society and a healthy planet – is firmly embedded in Materna’s DNA. We are constantly striving to improve our social commitment and our contribution to environmental protection.

Materna – Member of the UN Global Compact Network

Materna has been a member of the UN Global Compact Network since 2021. This represents a clear commitment to human rights and environmental protection, as well as against discrimination and corruption. We participate annually in the rating process of the sustainability assessment platform EcoVadis and complete the CDP questionnaire. Furthermore, Materna is currently preparing step by step for the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

Employees

As an employer, we place great importance on family-friendly policies, diversity and flexible working hours. Fostering our employees’ talents and potential, enabling personal growth and development, and actively involving employees in corporate culture initiatives are key aspects of our company. An overview of all the benefits and opportunities Materna offers its employees can be found at Working at Materna – Be part of the Story, in line with our motto “Balance, Grow, Care, Enjoy”.

It is important to us that our workforce reflects society and our industry. Women’s empowerment is one of our key focus areas. As #TeamMaterna, we raise the profile of women, support their leadership careers and encourage them to take on greater responsibility. These measures form an integral part of our People & Culture management and are supported by the entire senior management team. They are backed by a network of employees within our WoMen Community.

Materna is also a signatory to the Diversity Charter.

At its sites in Dortmund and Cologne, Materna has held the EU Silver Label for Certified Cycle-Friendly Employers since 2024 and 2025 respectively. We have achieved this thanks to, among other things, good cycling infrastructure at our Dortmund site, joint company-wide initiatives, additional services and repair facilities!

Employee representative bodies such as the works council, the youth and trainee representatives, and the representatives for employees with severe disabilities work in close collaboration with management to continuously promote equality, work-life balance, diversity and inclusion.

The Materna Code of Conduct sets out the principles of working together at Materna in a way that is easy for all employees to understand.

Our occupational health and safety management system is certified to ISO 45001 and is designed to ensure consistent prevention in the field of occupational health and safety.

Environment

As an IT service provider, we believe that the greatest contribution we can make to environmental protection is to conserve resources and reduce our CO2 emissions to a minimum. Here is an overview of our environmental protection initiatives:

  • Procurement of 100% green electricity for our sites and the operation of our internal data centre
  • Annual carbon footprint assessment and implementation of measures to reduce emissions
  • Promotion of electric company cars and charging points for electric cars and e-bikes
  • Energy-efficient headquarters in Dortmund (KfW Efficiency Building Level 40) with an in-house photovoltaic system, used, among other things, to charge the electric company car fleet
  • Option for employees to use bicycles, e-bikes and cargo bikes via JobRad
  • BahnCard Business for business travellers and a discounted Germany-wide ticket for all employees
  • Environmental management system certified to ISO 14001

Society

Our commitment outside the company focuses in particular on social projects supported by employees on a voluntary basis. Thematically, the focus is primarily on projects in the fields of education and sport, for socially disadvantaged groups, and in the support of children and young people.

Examples of Materna SE’s social engagement include the Christmas donation, participation in charitable sports competitions, the programme offered on Girls’ Day, and the Public Sector Graduate Award.
